Avalanche (AVAX) is a layer-1 blockchain launched in 2020 by Ava Labs, led by Emin Gün Sirer, a computer science professor at Cornell University. Designed to overcome the scalability constraints of Bitcoin and Ethereum, it achieves processing speeds of up to 6,500 transactions per second with transaction finality of under one second. It employs a proprietary consensus mechanism that combines the Avalanche consensus protocol with proof-of-stake (PoS). Origins

Avalanche began as an academic project. Emin Gün Sirer had long been a vocal critic of the structural limitations of Bitcoin and Ethereum during his time at Cornell. His core arguments were that Bitcoin's proof-of-work mechanism wastes energy and constrains scalability, and that Ethereum had failed to solve its transaction throughput and fee problems. Avalanche was the product of research into a new consensus mechanism intended to address both shortcomings simultaneously.

Following its mainnet launch in September 2020, the network attracted rapid attention. During the 2021 bull market, AVAX surged from $5 to an all-time high of $146, riding the positioning of "a fast, cheap alternative to Ethereum" at a time when Ethereum gas fees were spiking. The subsequent crypto winter of 2022 sent it tumbling, and it was not spared the fallout from the collapse of FTX — investment vehicles affiliated with the FTX group had been involved in funding the Avalanche ecosystem.

The strategy that followed the crash was one of differentiation rather than direct competition. Rather than battling Solana and Ethereum for dominance in decentralised finance (DeFi) and NFTs, Avalanche repositioned itself as the infrastructure on which corporations and institutions could build their own blockchains. The centrepiece of that strategy is Subnets.

What the coin actually does

AVAX is the native token of the Avalanche network, used to pay transaction fees, for staking, and to create Subnets. The network's defining architectural feature is its three-chain structure. The X-Chain (Exchange Chain) handles asset issuance and exchange; the P-Chain (Platform Chain) manages validators and Subnet creation; and the C-Chain (Contract Chain) runs smart contracts and dApps. By distributing functions across separate chains rather than concentrating everything in one — as Ethereum does — the network reduces bottlenecks.

Subnets are Avalanche's most powerful differentiator. They allow companies and institutions to deploy customised blockchains with their own rules, validators, and gas policies, while sharing the security of the Avalanche mainnet. The architecture is well suited to financial institutions running permissioned blockchains for regulatory compliance, or gaming companies building game-specific chains with their own token economies. Amazon Web Services (AWS) now officially supports hosting of Avalanche nodes, lowering the barrier to entry for enterprises already operating on cloud infrastructure.

There is a notable Korean connection. In 2026, Hyundai Card — the credit card arm of the Hyundai conglomerate — conducted a proof-of-concept (PoC) for international stablecoin remittances using Avalanche's blockchain and Tether (USDT), successfully transferring $20,000 from Hyundai Motor's US subsidiary to its Mexican subsidiary in just seven minutes. Traditional bank transfers between the same entities typically take three to four hours. The exercise demonstrated that Avalanche is functioning not merely as a speculative asset but as real-world corporate payments infrastructure — and a South Korean company provided that proof.

Current state and challenges

Avalanche has carved out a distinctive position in the enterprise blockchain market through its Subnet strategy, but challenges remain. The requirement to stake a minimum of 2,000 AVAX to operate a Subnet creates a meaningful financial barrier for smaller companies. An upgrade known as Avalanche9000 is under way to reduce that threshold.

Competition from Ethereum's layer-2 networks is an additional variable. Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base are growing rapidly on the back of faster speeds and lower fees, directly encroaching on the territory where Avalanche has sought to differentiate itself. Solana, too, is aggressively expanding its enterprise partnerships, with ambitions in the same corporate market.

In 2026, the Avalanche Foundation completed the formation of a $1bn institutional investment fund. The structure involves purchasing AVAX and deploying capital to support validator operations, the tokenisation of real-world assets (RWA), and corporate partnerships — a signal that institutional capital is beginning to flow into the ecosystem in a structural rather than speculative way.

Assessment

Avalanche has evolved from "a faster coin than Ethereum" into "the infrastructure on which enterprises build their own blockchains." The thread connecting its Subnet strategy, the AWS partnership, and the Hyundai Card PoC suggests a network that is genuinely connecting itself to the real economy. As blockchain transitions from speculative asset to practical infrastructure, Avalanche's positioning points in the right direction.

That said, competition from Ethereum layer-2 networks and Solana is intensifying, and the Subnet ecosystem will require time before it grows explosively. Whether the "enterprise blockchain infrastructure" narrative translates into real-world adoption at scale will ultimately determine the long-term direction of the AVAX price.
