Ethereum (ETH) holds its place as the world's second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation, behind only Bitcoin. Since its mainnet launched on 30th July 2015, it has established itself as the standard platform for smart contracts and decentralised applications (dApps), with a market capitalisation now exceeding $300bn. Yet the question preoccupying the Ethereum community these days is not technical — it is financial: why has the price refused to reflect the network's progress? Technology continues to advance; the coin's price and the foundation's governance have not kept pace.

Origins

Ethereum was conceived as a response to Bitcoin's limitations. In late 2013, the programmer Vitalik Buterin published the Ethereum white paper, arguing that Bitcoin's scripting language was too constrained to support complex applications. Development funds were raised via a public crowdsale in 2014, and the network went live on 30th July 2015 under the name "Frontier."

The most defining early trauma came in 2016, when a hacker exploited a vulnerability in The DAO — an Ethereum-based investment fund — and siphoned off tens of millions of dollars' worth of ETH at prevailing prices. The community opted for a hard fork to reverse the theft, a deeply contentious decision. Those who rejected it remained on the original chain, which lives on as Ethereum Classic (ETC). The network's next landmark came in 2022 with "The Merge," which replaced energy-intensive proof-of-work mining with proof-of-stake validation, cutting energy consumption by more than 99%. Subsequent upgrades — Shanghai (2023), Dencun (2024), and Pectra (2025) — have continued to expand the network's capabilities.

What the Network Actually Does

Ethereum is not a payment system in any conventional sense; it bills itself as a "world computer." Developers build decentralised applications on top of it, and ETH serves two main purposes: paying transaction fees (known as gas) and staking, whereby holders lock up their coins to act as network validators and earn rewards in return. The DeFi (decentralised finance), NFT, and DAO ecosystems were largely built on Ethereum's foundations. A proliferating set of Layer 2 (L2) networks — including Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base — use Ethereum as their settlement layer, processing transactions more cheaply and quickly before anchoring them to the main chain.

Current Developments and Controversies

The technical roadmap remains ambitious. A hard fork codenamed "Glamsterdam," scheduled for the second half of 2026, is set to enshrine Proposer-Builder Separation (PBS) — a mechanism that formally separates the roles of block proposal and block construction, allowing validators to outsource the latter safely. The upgrade will also bring improvements to parallel transaction execution and gas-fee predictability. By purely technical measures, Ethereum is still regarded as among the best in class.

The trouble lies with the Ethereum Foundation (EF). In June the foundation cut its budget by roughly 40% and eliminated 20% of its workforce — some 54 positions. Over the preceding six months, nine senior figures, including co-executives, left or moved on, fuelling talk of a governance crisis. A former foundation official warned that retaining core developers costs approximately $30m a year, and that if cuts continue at the current pace, the foundation could face a funding shortfall within three to nine months. Buterin has pushed back, arguing that the foundation was always meant to be one pillar among many rather than the centre of gravity, and that the restructuring reflects a deliberate effort to slim down around core principles — censorship resistance, privacy, and security.

Market signals are mixed. The American listed company BitMine has accumulated roughly 5.74m ETH, equivalent to approximately 4.8% of the circulating supply, with an avowed target of 5% — mimicking the bitcoin treasury strategy pioneered by Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy). A cohort of so-called "ETH treasury companies" has emerged as a new class of institutional buyer. At the same time, spot Ethereum ETFs recorded net outflows for seven consecutive trading days, shedding close to 7% of assets in a single week. The divergence has sharpened a broader scepticism: if L2 networks are thriving, why is ETH itself failing to appreciate?

Assessment

As infrastructure, Ethereum's position remains formidable. The DeFi, NFT, and L2 ecosystems are all architected around it, and the upgrade calendar continues to deliver. But the present moment is defined by two contradictory signals running in parallel: governance disarray and funding anxiety on one side; aggressive institutional accumulation on the other.

There is also a structural concern. As L2 networks absorb more and more of Ethereum's transaction volume, the main chain (L1) captures less fee revenue — which is, arguably, the most fundamental reason the price has stalled. The central challenge for the next phase is clear: closing the gap between what Ethereum can do and what holding ETH actually earns investors.
