KATSEYE is a six-member multinational girl group launched in the United States on 16th August 2024 by Hybe UMG, a joint venture between Hybe — South Korea's largest entertainment conglomerate — and Geffen Records, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group. The group was assembled through a survival audition series called *The Debut: Dream Academy* and comprises members Manon, Sophia, Daniela, Lara, Megan, and Yoonchae. Based in Los Angeles, California, KATSEYE has become the most prominent test case for what the industry calls "localised K-pop" — applying the Korean pop industry's rigorous training and marketing playbook directly to the American market.
The growth story
KATSEYE is the flagship project of Bang Si-hyuk, Hybe's chairman, who has championed a "multi-home, multi-genre" strategy to transplant K-pop's production methods into Western markets. Since their debut, the group has performed at marquee festivals including Coachella and Lollapalooza, swept three awards — including New Artist of the Year — at this year's American Music Awards, and earned two Grammy nominations at the 68th ceremony. Their ascent has been swift by any measure.
That momentum reached its commercial peak with *WILD*, their third extended-play album, released on the 14th. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 170,000 units in the United States — KATSEYE's first chart-topper and a new record for first-week American sales by a K-pop girl group, surpassing TWICE's previous high of 153,000 units set with *READY TO BE*. The album also reached number two on the UK Official Albums Chart, their best result to date in Britain. *WILD* features five tracks spanning dance-pop, EDM, Brazilian funk, and contemporary pop, produced by a roster that includes Bang Si-hyuk alongside Ed Sheeran, Omar Fedi, Blake Slatkin, and John Goldstein.
Complications
Behind the record-breaking figures lies a more fraught picture. Member Manon missed not only the pre-release singles "PINKY UP" and "Animal" due to health issues, but also the recording and choreography sessions for *WILD* itself. Then, on the 7th, the group's leader Sophia announced she was stepping back from promotional activities to focus on her health and well-being. As a result, KATSEYE has been promoting the album as a four-piece, with Daniela, Lara, Megan, and Yoonchae carrying the campaign.
The reduced line-up has done little to dampen public interest. The four active members appeared on NBC's *Today* city concert series and *The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon* on the 14th, and both performances included public messages of support for their resting bandmates. The music video for the lead single "Hootie Frutti" surpassed ten million views on YouTube within 36 hours of release. All tracks on the album entered Spotify's US and global daily charts simultaneously on release day. On the 20th, the group topped the Global Rising Chart on Kpopyt Board, a widely followed K-pop data analytics index.
What comes next
The challenges ahead are clear. That KATSEYE could break world records with a depleted roster speaks to the group's underlying potential, but if the two members' absences prove prolonged, restoring a stable full-group operation becomes pressing. The timing is particularly sensitive: following the album's release, the group is scheduled to embark on "THE WILDWORLD Tour" across major cities in North America and Europe. Whether Manon and Sophia recover in time to join that tour is the most immediate question hanging over the group.
Over the longer term, the viability of the "localised K-pop" model itself faces scrutiny. The extraordinary commercial partnership between Hybe and Geffen Records has produced results that few predicted so quickly. Whether that momentum can be sustained — through the practical demands of member welfare and scheduling, and across the full arc of a touring and recording career — will determine the shape of KATSEYE's next chapter.
