Ondo Finance (ticker: ONDO) is a real-world asset (RWA) tokenisation protocol that places traditional financial instruments — principally US Treasuries and bonds — onto a blockchain, making them tradeable and usable on-chain. Despite dealing in the most conservative of assets, the project has secured backing from Coinbase Ventures and Pantera Capital, forged partnerships with BlackRock and JP Morgan, and positioned itself as the bridge connecting institutional capital with the cryptocurrency markets.

Origins

Ondo Finance was founded by a team with experience spanning both traditional finance and decentralised finance (DeFi), and from the outset it has pursued what it describes as "regulation-friendly RWA." Its two flagship products are OUSG, a token backed by short-term US Treasuries and aimed at accredited investors, and USDY, which distributes yield to retail investors using Treasuries and bank deposits as collateral. OUSG is notably structured to invest a significant portion of its assets in BlackRock's tokenised Treasury fund, BUIDL — making Ondo Finance, in effect, a project built directly atop institutional-grade RWA infrastructure that BlackRock itself created.

In 2025 the company unveiled Ondo Global Markets, a tokenised securities platform that extends its scope beyond Treasuries to include equities listed on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq. A further initiative — an engine for handling stocks and ETFs on the Solana blockchain — is planned for launch in 2026. The trajectory is unambiguous: starting with Treasury tokenisation and expanding towards equities and ETFs, Ondo Finance aims to migrate the entire traditional securities market on-chain.

What the token does

ONDO is the native token of this ecosystem, used for protocol governance and ecosystem incentives. The more meaningful measure of value, however, lies not in the token itself but in the scale of assets the protocol manages. Total value locked (TVL) has surpassed $2.5bn, and Ondo is broadening access to its USDY product across multiple blockchains, including Sui and Solana. Recent partnerships with PayPal and Google Cloud have further reinforced its position within the RWA sector.

State of play and risks

The RWA sector as a whole is widely regarded as one of the defining themes of the 2026 crypto market cycle, and Ondo Finance has benefited from the attention. The tokenised US Treasury market has expanded sharply since the start of the year, and the broader real-world asset tokenisation market has reportedly surpassed $19.3bn. In the United States, the CLARITY Act — legislation that would clarify the legal status of digital assets — is currently under Senate deliberation; if passed, it is expected to accelerate institutional inflows into RWA protocols, a development that would favour Ondo directly.

Risks remain, however. The scheduled release of locked-up token supply continues to raise concerns about short-term price volatility. There is also instructive precedent: the RWA theme reached a prior peak in 2024, when ONDO touched $1.48, before retreating alongside the broader market correction. The narrative of institutional money flowing in may yet take considerable time to translate into demonstrated financial performance.

Assessment

Investment risk: ★★★☆☆ — Thematic enthusiasm runs high, but the overhang from forthcoming token unlocks poses a persistent volatility risk.

Technology and product maturity: ★★★★☆ — Collaboration with BlackRock and JP Morgan lends credibility to what is genuinely institutional-grade infrastructure.

Ecosystem scalability: ★★★★☆ — Tokenisation scope is expanding from Treasuries to equities and ETFs, supported by a growing multi-chain presence.

Overall interest: ★★★★☆ — With RWA emerging as one of the most closely watched narratives of 2026, Ondo Finance sits squarely at the centre of investor attention.
