Yuanta Securities reaffirmed its "Buy" rating and target price of 2,300,000 won on Samsung Electro-Mechanics (KOSPI: 009150) on 11th August, maintaining the stock as its top sector pick. Based on the closing price of 1,274,000 won on 10th August, the implied upside is 81%.

Strong second-quarter results beat expectations

Samsung Electro-Mechanics reported revenue of 3.46 trillion won and operating profit of 440.4 billion won for the second quarter of 2026 (April–June), representing year-on-year increases of 24.2% and 106.8% respectively. The operating margin expanded by 5.1 percentage points to 12.7%, up from 7.6% a year earlier. Both figures exceeded market consensus — revenue by 4.3% and operating profit by 8.5% — delivering a clear earnings surprise.

By division, the Component Solutions segment — which includes multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), the passive components found in virtually every electronic device — generated revenue of 1.65 trillion won, up 28.8% year-on-year. The Package Solutions segment, centred on FC-BGA (flip-chip ball grid array) substrates used in high-performance processors, contributed 771.6 billion won, a 36.7% increase. Demand from AI server manufacturers was the primary growth driver in both divisions.

MLCC pricing power gathers momentum

Underpinning the margin improvement is a sustained push to raise MLCC prices. In May 2026, Samsung Electro-Mechanics implemented a 10% price increase on lower-value PC-grade products sold through distribution channels. In July, it announced a further rise of up to 30% across its entire channel product range — a broadening in both the scale and scope of increases.

This trend is not unique to Samsung Electro-Mechanics. Order book data from its global peers point to an industry-wide tightening. The book-to-bill ratio — a measure of new orders relative to shipments, where a reading above 1.0 signals excess demand — has risen sharply across the sector. Japan's Murata recorded a ratio of 1.47; Taiyo Yuden reached 1.72; and Taiwan's Yageo climbed to 2.2. The acceleration reflects a structural shift: as manufacturers redirect production capacity towards high-specification server-grade MLCCs, supply of commodity-grade components is being squeezed, deepening what analysts describe as a structural shortage. This dynamic is likely to sustain upward pricing pressure over the medium term.

AI capex boom reshapes the substrate business

A similar structural shift is reshaping the substrate business. Capital expenditure by the four largest North American technology companies — Alphabet (Google), Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta — is projected to rise 82.5% year-on-year in 2026, with a further 35.3% increase forecast for 2027. In their race to build out AI infrastructure, these companies are increasingly securing long-term supply agreements (LTAs) with Korean component makers and co-investing in capacity expansion.

In response, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has raised its capital expenditure budget for 2026 to 1.8 trillion won, partly funded by advance payments from customers. The company is also in discussions with around ten customers over LTAs for ultra-high-voltage, high-capacitance MLCCs designed for premium AI servers. For suppliers, LTAs provide a structural backstop: they stabilise utilisation rates, improve earnings visibility, and help protect profitability even if the broader industry cycle turns.

Valuation stretched, risks remain

Yuanta Securities derived its 2,300,000 won target price by applying a target price-to-earnings multiple of 66.1 times to its 2027 earnings-per-share estimate of 34,637 won. The broker forecasts operating profit of 1.96 trillion won for full-year 2026 and 3.67 trillion won for 2027 — representing increases of 114.8% and 87.2% respectively relative to the 913.3 billion won recorded in 2025.

Investors should, however, weigh several risks. At the current share price, the stock trades on a 2026 forward price-to-earnings multiple of 67.7 times — well above the average for semiconductor materials and components companies. The target multiple of 66.1 times is itself at a historical peak, meaning any shortfall in earnings could trigger a sharp de-rating.

There is also a timing consideration: the MLCC price increases have so far been applied to distribution channels, and it may take a quarter or more before original equipment manufacturers — the end-users — absorb the higher costs fully. Meanwhile, concentrating capacity on server-grade MLCCs is profitable in the short run, but risks hollowing out the commodity product base. Should demand for general-purpose MLCCs weaken, the company's portfolio could become uncomfortably concentrated.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics' shares have returned 695.8% over the past twelve months, outperforming the broader market by 305.5 percentage points over the same period. The substantial gap between the current price and the target price suggests further upside in Yuanta's view, but such a rapid run-up also implies heightened volatility ahead.
