Uniswap (ticker: UNI) is the governance token of Uniswap, the leading decentralised exchange (DEX) protocol built on the Ethereum blockchain. The project is widely credited with popularising the automated market maker (AMM) model — a mechanism that allows users to swap tokens directly with one another without routing trades through a centralised exchange.
Origins
Uniswap was created by Hayden Adams and deployed on Ethereum's mainnet in 2018, with early development supported by the Ethereum Foundation. The protocol grew rapidly on the back of the decentralised finance (DeFi) boom that followed. In 2020, Uniswap launched the UNI token and distributed it in a large-scale airdrop to early users of the protocol — a move that generated considerable attention and marked the project's transition to a community-governed structure.
What the token does
UNI is Uniswap's governance token, giving holders the right to vote on changes to the protocol — including adjustments to its fee structure and the introduction of new features. The most significant recent development is the activation of a "fee switch". Under this mechanism, a portion of the trading fees generated by the protocol is used to buy back and burn UNI tokens, reducing the circulating supply and creating a deflationary dynamic intended to support the token's value over time.
Current state and controversies
According to data from DeFiLlama, a DeFi analytics platform, this burn mechanism removed approximately $22.5m worth of UNI from circulation in the first half of 2026 alone. Despite this, the price has yet to stage a meaningful recovery. UNI has fallen roughly 2.4% over the past 24 hours and is trading at around $2.87, having spent several weeks in a narrow range with no clear directional momentum.
Also worth watching is the behaviour of large holders. Even as supply contracts, so-called "whale" investors appear to be accumulating positions cautiously rather than chasing prices higher. The absence of sharp price moves, combined with steady capital flows and trading volumes, is being read by some market participants as a quietly encouraging sign.
Assessment
Investment risk: ★★★☆☆ — A major DeFi token, but prolonged sideways trading limits near-term volatility.
Technical maturity: ★★★★☆ — The protocol that set the standard for decentralised exchanges, with a well-established and battle-tested codebase.
Ecosystem scalability: ★★★☆☆ — Multi-chain expansion is under way, but a growing field of competing DEXs poses a real challenge to market-share defence.
Overall interest: ★★★☆☆ — The burn mechanism provides a credible structural catalyst, but its effect on the token price remains slow to materialise.
