Zcash (ZEC) is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency launched in October 2016. Where most blockchains record every transaction in full public view, Zcash uses a cryptographic technique known as zk-SNARKs (zero-knowledge succinct non-interactive arguments of knowledge) to allow users to conceal the sender, recipient, and amount involved in any given transaction. The fact that a transaction occurred is still recorded on the ledger; its contents are not.
Origins
From the outset, Zcash was built around the principle of "selective privacy." Users may transact either through conventional transparent addresses or through so-called "shielded" addresses that keep details hidden. One of its founders previously established a digital security and privacy technology firm, and co-developed BLAKE3, a widely used cryptographic hash function. The project's early volatility became the stuff of legend: on its first day of trading, the price surged to $5,941 before collapsing to $22 within a matter of months — a trajectory that neatly illustrated just how experimental and contested the project was at birth.
Its tokenomics are modelled closely on Bitcoin. Total supply is capped at 21 million coins, with new units issued as block subsidies to miners. In essence, Zcash borrowed Bitcoin's scarcity framework and grafted privacy on top of it as a distinctive value proposition.
What the coin actually does
ZEC is the native token of the Zcash network and serves as a means of transferring value while preserving user privacy. The zk-SNARKs mechanism validates transactions without revealing their substance, allowing Zcash to retain the permissionless, decentralised qualities of a cryptocurrency while offering users meaningful control over their financial information.
This year, Zcash has shown signs of ambition beyond its identity as a straightforward privacy coin. The Zcash Open Development Lab (ZODL) has been established, and the project secured $25m in funding led by prominent venture capital firms including Paradigm and a16z crypto, with further institutional interest from Winklevoss Capital and Chapter One. The move is widely interpreted as an attempt to evolve from a single-purpose privacy coin into a self-custodial private financial platform.
Current standing and controversies
Renewed enthusiasm for the privacy-coin sector more broadly has brought ZEC back into the spotlight. As of 31st July, the token was trading at around $460, having posted strong gains earlier in the week before giving back some ground towards the weekend. Technical indicators, however, suggest market sentiment remains closer to bearish than bullish.
Privacy as a core feature creates an inherent tension with regulation. Anti-money-laundering rules and travel rules — which require the identification of transaction counterparties — sit uneasily alongside a coin whose primary purpose is to obscure that very information. In response, the Zcash community has championed the concept of a "viewing key": a mechanism that keeps transactions private by default but allows the holder to grant selective access to specific parties when required, offering a potential path to regulatory compliance. Separately, a recent controversy over alleged network outages proved to be a false alarm: what appeared to be a disruption following a security upgrade turned out to be a block explorer failing to keep pace with the chain, rather than any fault in the network itself.
