HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is stepping up its push into the global naval defence market, led by a new generation of warships incorporating advanced digital technologies.
The company has been channelling its resources into the design and construction of next-generation vessels equipped with autonomous navigation systems and smart combat management platforms. The strategy is intended to address both maritime safety and enhanced defensive capability simultaneously.
Building on a strong track record of constructing warships for South Korea's navy, the firm aims to expand into overseas export markets. Naval vessel contracts are widely regarded as among the most lucrative in the defence-industrial sector: beyond the initial build, they typically generate long-term revenue streams through maintenance, upgrades, and technology-transfer agreements.
The push comes at a propitious moment. With geopolitical tensions driving up demand for maritime security capabilities across Asia, the Middle East, and beyond, South Korean shipbuilders are attracting growing attention as credible suppliers in a market traditionally dominated by American and European defence contractors.
