*Editor's note: "One Track" is a series that takes a deep dive into landmark K-pop songs. The fourteenth instalment examines Le Sserafim's "UNFORGIVEN," which became a million-seller within a year of the group's debut.*

Le Sserafim debuted in May 2022. Barely twelve months later, on 1st May 2023, the five-member girl group released their first full-length album, also titled *UNFORGIVEN*. It sold more than a million copies on the day of release alone — the fastest any female K-pop act had ever reached that milestone.

Origins

The title track blends hip-hop with funk, and its lyrical thrust is defiant: a declaration of intent to forge one's own path rather than submit to rules set by others. Its most striking feature is a sample drawn from "The Ecstasy of Gold," composed by the Italian maestro Ennio Morricone for the 1966 Spaghetti Western *The Good, the Bad and the Ugly*. The sample was used with direct authorisation from Morricone's estate — no small feat of negotiation. Nile Rodgers, the American guitarist and producer best known for his work with Chic and David Bowie, contributed the track's distinctive funk guitar rhythm. The music video, filmed in Bangkok, leans fully into the Western aesthetic: dusty landscapes, cowboy attire, and member Kim Chaewon galloping through a ruined city on a white horse — a visual metaphor for breaking free from social judgement and constraint.

Records and commercial performance

On release day, the album sold 1,024,034 copies — the highest single-day sales figure ever recorded by a female K-pop artist, solo performers included. That figure was more than double the day-one sales of the group's previous hit *ANTIFRAGILE* (408,833 copies), and surpassed that album's entire first-week total (567,673 copies) within 24 hours. Over the first full tracking week (2nd–8th May), cumulative sales reached 1,258,011 copies, topping the Circle Chart (formerly Gaon Chart), South Korea's main music sales tracker. By comparison, the group's debut EP, *FEARLESS*, had sold roughly 300,000 copies in its opening week — making *UNFORGIVEN* approximately four times more successful out of the gate.

Internationally, the album entered the Billboard 200 at number six, marking Le Sserafim's first top-ten appearance on that chart, and reached number one on Japan's Oricon album chart. It received a million-seller certification in South Korea and a Gold certification (100,000 units or more) in Japan. The Recording Academy named the title track one of "15 K-pop songs that defined 2023," and the group picked up the Artist of the Year prize (digital and streaming category) at the Circle Chart Music Awards, along with the Best Digital Song prize at the Golden Disc Awards. The track also received nominations at the MAMA Awards in the Song of the Year and Best Dance Performance (female) categories.

Why it matters

*UNFORGIVEN* is a striking case study in what well-resourced ambition can achieve at the very start of a career. Hibe and its subsidiary Source Music — the entertainment conglomerate behind Le Sserafim — committed substantial creative and financial capital to this project from the outset: securing rights from one of the 20th century's most celebrated film composers and enlisting a musician of Nile Rodgers's stature are not routine undertakings for a group still in its debut year. The outcome illustrates a broader Hibe formula: compress the usual arc from newcomer to mega-hit artist by front-loading resources rather than accumulating them gradually over time.

More broadly, the album challenges an old assumption in the music industry — that superstardom requires years of slow build-up. Le Sserafim proved that a debut act, given bold ideas and sufficient backing from the start, can reach million-seller status within twelve months of its first release.

*On a melody borrowed from the setting sun, Le Sserafim chose their own path over someone else's rules.*
