The record results outpaced analyst consensus by around 8%, and were accompanied by plans for roughly 100tn won in shareholder returns this year. However, half the per-share dividend stems from a one-time gain on SK Hynix's investment in Kioxia, and half of the 20tn won share buyback is reserved for employee compensation.
Three key takeaways
SK Hynix's third-quarter operating profit came in at 83.33tn won, up 37.6% from the previous quarter. The result beat the FnGuide analyst consensus of approximately 77tn won by around 8%, with an operating margin of roughly 79.7%.
The quarterly dividend will be 20,000 won per share — 10,000 won reflecting underlying earnings performance and 10,000 won as a special dividend funded by gains on the Kioxia investment. The company also resolved to buy back 20tn won in shares, and now expects total shareholder returns for the full year to reach approximately 100tn won.
That 100tn won figure is a target, not a guarantee. The special dividend will not recur. And the portion of the buyback allocated to employee compensation is excluded from the 100tn won tally, as those shares will not be cancelled.
The numbers at a glance
| Metric | Q3 result | vs. previous quarter | vs. year-earlier quarter | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 104.62tn won | +31.9% | +327.9% | Consensus: 98.23tn won |
| Operating profit | 83.33tn won | +37.6% | +632.1% | Consensus: 76.96tn won |
| Operating margin | ~79.7% | Q2: ~76.3% | Q3 last year: ~46.6% | Consensus estimate: 78.4% |
| Net profit | 39.78tn won | -57.7% | +215.7% |
Operating profit beat the FnGuide consensus by approximately 8.3%; revenue beat by roughly 6.5%. Cumulative operating profit for the year to date stands at 181.49tn won. (Margin figures and consensus comparisons are calculated from the preliminary disclosure and may differ from final audited results.)
Why net profit fell sharply
The 57.7% quarter-on-quarter decline in net profit is eye-catching, but it does not signal any deterioration in the core business. In the second quarter, pre-tax profit of 122.71tn won was nearly double the operating profit of 60.54tn won, implying roughly 62tn won of non-operating gains. In the third quarter, pre-tax profit of 50.71tn won was actually below the operating profit of 83.33tn won, implying roughly 33tn won of non-operating losses. The preliminary disclosure does not explain the cause; the full quarterly report's footnotes and the earnings conference call will be needed to understand the swing.
What has been decided on shareholder returns
| Item | Detail | Nature |
|---|---|---|
| Total 2025 shareholder returns | ~100tn won (cash dividends 30tn won+; buyback and cancellation 60tn won+) | Target figure; excludes employee-compensation shares |
| Q3 dividend | 20,000 won per share (10,000 won earnings-linked + 10,000 won Kioxia special dividend) | Resolved; more than 50× the previous quarterly dividend of 375 won |
| New share buyback | 20tn won resolved: ~10tn won for shareholder-return purposes (to be cancelled); ~10tn won for employee compensation | Resolved |
| Existing buyback | Includes the 40tn won buyback-and-cancellation resolved in August | Ongoing (acquisition period ends 19 November) |
| Going forward | Buyback size to be set by the board each quarter; remaining Kioxia special dividend to be paid as a year-end dividend | To be determined |
Assuming approximately 730 million shares in issue — a back-of-the-envelope estimate derived from the August disclosure that the 40tn won buyback represented 24.07 million shares, or 3.3% of the total — the aggregate Q3 dividend payout would be roughly 14.6tn won. On the same basis, the earnings-linked 10,000 won amounts to approximately 7.3tn won, as does the special Kioxia dividend.
How much of the return programme is sustainable?
This announcement broadly meets what the market has been pressing for. SK Hynix was criticised in July for falling short of return expectations; in August it overhauled its policy to commit at least 50% of free cash flow (FCF) to shareholder returns. This disclosure puts concrete numbers on both dividends and buybacks, and the implied total exceeds the roughly 90tn won minimum that IBK Investment Securities had estimated for the full year.
Qualitatively, however, the picture is more nuanced. First, the special dividend is funded by gains on the Kioxia stake. The Dong-A Ilbo newspaper reported that SK Hynix's Kioxia profit amounts to approximately 20tn won, of which 80% — around 16tn won — is earmarked for the special dividend. Reuters noted that unrealised fair-value gains are included in that figure. The company's disclosure did not specify the total. Because this is a one-off, the same scale of payout should not be expected next year; the recurring return will be the performance-linked dividend and ongoing buybacks. Second, of the 60tn won-plus buyback commitment, the amounts formally resolved to date appear to total roughly 50tn won: the 40tn won from August plus approximately 10tn won in shareholder-return-purpose shares announced now. The remainder depends on future quarterly board resolutions. Third, the approximately 10tn won earmarked for employee compensation will not be cancelled and, as the company itself acknowledges, is excluded from the 100tn won headline.
What markets will watch
SK Hynix's share price had already fallen 30% over the preceding month when these results were released. A report in the Dong-A Ilbo on 26 October flagging the 16tn won special dividend may have partially pre-priced the return announcement, meaning the market's reaction after the open will depend less on the headline figures than on whether their scale exceeds what was already anticipated.
Our reading is as follows. Results beating consensus supports the recent narrative that earnings expectations remained intact even as the share price fell. A shareholder-return policy now backed by firm numbers provides a floor for the valuation. On the other hand, the one-off nature of the special dividend and the non-cancellation of employee-compensation shares both reduce the quality of the return programme as seen by the market. Crucially, this preliminary disclosure contains no information on HBM (high-bandwidth memory) volumes, pricing, or long-term supply agreements — all of which are essential for assessing the structural direction of the memory industry. The conference call will be the place to look.
What to watch next
Conference call: Pricing negotiations for HBM4 in 2027, the proportion of revenue covered by long-term supply contracts, capital expenditure plans, and any signs of customer pushback. The current consensus for Q4 operating profit is 87.27tn won.
Share price reaction at the open: Whether the earnings beat and the scale of shareholder returns exceed whatever was pre-priced.
Samsung Electronics board meeting (late October): Confirmation of Samsung's Q3 dividend. Samsung has signalled a dividend of approximately 30tn won inclusive of its regular quarterly payout. The two companies' return structures will invite direct comparison.
Remaining Kioxia special dividend: Timing and size of the year-end payment.
19 November: Deadline for completing the 40tn won buyback resolved in August.
