Overview
KT, one of South Korea's three major telecoms groups, operates the GiGA Genie line of hybrid AI speakers and set-top boxes, designed to work in tandem with its IPTV service, GeniTV. Two models are currently available to new subscribers: the flagship GiGA Genie 3 and the entry-level GiGA Genie A. The core proposition is straightforward — combine an IPTV receiver with an AI voice assistant so that viewers can control their television and connected home devices without ever picking up a remote.
Specifications
The GiGA Genie 3 features a 15W speaker developed in partnership with Harman Kardon, a 50% increase in output over the 10W unit in its predecessor, the GiGA Genie 2. A dual passive radiator configuration reinforces bass response. On the picture side, the device supports Dolby Vision and HDR10. KT claims CPU performance has improved by 2.5 times compared with the previous generation, translating into faster app loading and smoother multitasking. The monthly rental fee is 4,400 won (roughly $3.20).
The GiGA Genie A supports 4K UHD at 60 frames per second and, on paper, matches its more expensive sibling for processing power. The compromises are audible and visible, however: speaker output drops to just 3W — a fifth of the Genie 3's — and Dolby Vision is absent. Lower standby power consumption helps bring the monthly rental down to 3,300 won.
Both models respond to the Korean wake word "Jini-ya" and can handle natural-language commands for channel changes, launching OTT streaming services, playing music, delivering weather and traffic updates, and controlling compatible smart-home devices such as lighting. Users can also customise the wake word and adjust voice-prompt volume through the GiGA Genie home menu.
Strengths and Limitations
The device's chief strength is its integration as a living-room hub. Subscribers already paying for GeniTV get an AI speaker bundled into their set-top box without buying or installing separate hardware. The GiGA Genie 3, in particular, stands out among IPTV set-top boxes of its class: Harman Kardon sound and Dolby Vision support are not features typically found in rivals at this price point.
The limitations become apparent when GiGA Genie is evaluated as a standalone smart speaker rather than an IPTV accessory. The Genie A's processing credentials may be respectable, but the severe reduction in speaker output makes the "entry-level" label feel like an understatement — the gap in everyday AI-speaker experience between the two models is considerable. More broadly, GiGA Genie does not aspire to the independent smart-home reach of, say, Samsung SmartThings or Naver's Clova platform. It feels more like a value-added feature bolted onto an IPTV subscription than an autonomous home intelligence system.
Verdict
GiGA Genie is a sensible marriage of TV viewing and AI voice control in a single box. The Genie 3, with its Harman Kardon collaboration and Dolby Vision support, makes a credible case that existing GeniTV subscribers need not buy a separate AI speaker. For those hoping for a fully independent smart-home hub, however, the Genie A's trimmed specifications and both models' inherent dependence on KT's IPTV ecosystem will disappoint.
