Introduction

LG Electronics unveiled the UltraGear Evo, a new premium tier within its UltraGear gaming monitor brand, at CES 2026. It marks the first time LG has introduced a distinct premium sub-line since launching the UltraGear brand in 2018. The range comprises three models: a 27-inch (27GM950B), a 39-inch (39GC950B), and a 52-inch (52G930B).

Specifications

The 27-inch and 39-inch models feature on-device AI processing, with "5K AI Upscaling" as their headline capability. Rather than requiring users to upgrade their PC's graphics card (GPU), the monitor's own AI engine enhances image quality in real time — rendering lower-resolution content at what LG describes as 5K-equivalent clarity.

The 27-inch model is built around a Mini LED panel with a native resolution of 5,120×2,880. The 39-inch opts for a curved OLED display — 5K2K (5,120×2,160) with a 1,500R curvature — designed to maximise immersion. The 52-inch, aimed at gamers who want a cinematic-scale experience, uses a curved 5K2K (5,120×2,160) panel with a tighter 1,000R curvature, a 21:9 aspect ratio, and a peak refresh rate of 240Hz.

Strengths and Limitations

The UltraGear Evo's most compelling proposition is practical: it improves image quality without demanding a hardware overhaul. Traditionally, unlocking high-resolution gaming requires a costly GPU upgrade; by handling upscaling within the monitor itself, LG reduces the financial burden on the wider system. Lee Chung-hwan, Executive Vice-President and Head of LG's Display Business Division, said the range would deliver "a gaming experience on a different level" by combining performance, clarity, and immersion.

There are caveats. AI upscaling is limited to the 27-inch and 39-inch models; LG makes no explicit mention of the feature for the 52-inch, creating a notable split within the lineup. Additionally, even sophisticated AI upscaling has its limits — content that originates at very low resolutions may still fall short of genuinely sharp output. As a premium sub-brand, pricing is expected to sit considerably above that of standard UltraGear models.
