At 1pm on 29th May 2026, aespa returned with a lemon. Their new single, "LEMONADE", saw the warriors who once battled enemies across a vast fictional wilderness turn to a new metaphor: hardship as something to be squeezed, blended and drunk down. The group has long been associated with a cold, hard "metallic" sound, and fans coined the term *soe-kom-dal-kom*—roughly, "sour-sweet steel"—to describe what happens when that sonic signature meets a sharper, more playful tang. Five months on, the record the song has built deserves a closer look.
Origins
"LEMONADE" is the lead single from aespa's second full-length studio album. The album was announced on 20th April 2026, and on 11th May a preview track, "WDA (Whole Different Animal)", featuring G-Dragon, was released ahead of it. The full ten-track album arrived on 29th May, with "LEMONADE" and "WDA" jointly designated as double title tracks. Both the album and the single take their name from the familiar Western adage: when life gives you lemons, make lemonade—the notion that adversity can be turned into opportunity.
The credits are dominated by overseas collaborators. Lyrics were written by Ellie Suh; composition and arrangement were handled by Shift K3Y, the project led by Lewis Jankel, with additional writing contributions from Jordan Shaw, UPSAHL and Cyrus Villanueva. Musically, the track centres on a driving synth bass within an electronic dance framework. The group's management noted that the lyrics hint at a new chapter in aespa's overarching fictional universe.
The music video was released alongside the audio. In it, a "lemon bug" enters aespa's parallel world, causing fractures that open a portal called the P.O.S., through which the members travel to transform a darkened realm. The choreography is deliberately stripped-back and kitsch, with a pointed "lemon-squeezing" gesture anchoring the chorus. The group performed the song live for the first time on KBS's *Music Bank* on release day. The members said their ultimate aim was for everyone who heard the album to take away positive energy—much as the record's guiding motto asks listeners to blend life's sourness into something worth savouring.
Chart Performance
The numbers arrived first from abroad. On 9th June 2026 (local time), Billboard revealed that the *LEMONADE* album had entered the Billboard 200 at number nine—aespa's third top-ten appearance on the chart. Their previous peaks were number nine for the mini-album *MY WORLD* and number three for *Girls*, the latter remaining their best result to date. In the same chart week, the group reached number 11 on the Artist 100, topped the World Albums chart and came in at number two on Top Album Sales, with 34,500 units shifted.
The title track performed solidly as well. "LEMONADE" reached number 20 on the Billboard Global 200, number eight on the Global Excl. US chart and number seven on the Bubbling Under Hot 100—the ranking that sits just below the main Hot 100. In Britain, it debuted at number 95 on the Official Singles Chart, marking aespa's first-ever entry on the UK's main singles ranking. On 1st June, a remix by the American-Russian DJ Zedd was released.
At home in South Korea, the track took first place on Mnet's *M Countdown* on 18th June. Large-scale pop-up events in Seoul's Yeouido and Banpo districts and at the IFC Mall drew lengthy queues, while further installations followed in Los Angeles, New York, Shenzhen and Bangkok. Collaborative products with doughnut, beverage, convenience store and fast-food brands reportedly sold out almost immediately.
What Set It Apart
"LEMONADE" pushes aespa's established formula one step further rather than departing from it. Since their debut, the group has built its identity on an elaborate fictional universe and a metallic, industrial sound—though critics have sometimes found the lore impenetrable. "Spicy" lightened the mood somewhat, and in 2024 "Supernova" broadened the group's mainstream appeal by layering a relentless hook and sharp performance moments over cold, machine-like textures. "LEMONADE" continues that trajectory: the synth-bass clang remains, but the hook is rendered playful and immediately legible. By anchoring the narrative in a universally recognised proverb, the song conveys its theme of turning setbacks into opportunities without requiring listeners to decode any fictional backstory.
That said, it is not simply cheerful. One reviewer noted that the brightness here is neither soft nor refreshing in the conventional sense—a sour, slightly bitter undercurrent persists. Member Winter was reported to have described the song as closer to sour than metallic.
Critical opinion on the album was divided. Britain's NME awarded it 3.5 out of 5, praising a confident assurance in its stronger moments while questioning whether the middle section fully holds together. South Korean music publication IZM gave it 2 out of 5, arguing that the group's continued reliance on its established "metallic" palette leaves it in need of bolder artistic reinvention.
Significance
"LEMONADE" is another test of aespa's working method: preserve the core identity, lower the entry barrier. Keep the steel; add a sour-sweet doorway through which more listeners can walk. The pop-up queues, the brand partnerships, the Billboard 200 top ten and the first appearance on a British chart all read as evidence that the approach is working. Yet, as the more sceptical reviews suggest, the more consistently this formula is deployed, the harder it becomes to sustain a sense of novelty—and that tension remains unresolved.
In a Word
aespa set out to blend hardship into something drinkable. By adding a drop of sourness to their signature steel, they have made their sound newly irresistible.
