*Editor's note: "One Track" is a series examining landmark K-pop songs in depth. The eighteenth instalment focuses on "Growl," the song that defined EXO's golden era.*
As of 27th December 2013, combined sales of EXO's debut studio album and its repackaged edition had reached 1,007,577 copies. It was the first time an album had sold more than one million physical copies in South Korea since 2001 — a gap of twelve years. At the centre of that achievement was "Growl," the title track of the repackaged album. Released in both Korean and Mandarin Chinese by a twelve-member group barely a year into their career, the song demonstrated the enduring power of the album market at a time when digital streaming had come to dominate the industry.
Origins
EXO debuted in 2012 under SM Entertainment, one of South Korea's dominant entertainment conglomerates. The group was structured as two sub-units: EXO-K, focused on the South Korean market, and EXO-M, targeting China. "Growl" was released on 5th August 2013 on the repackaged edition of the group's first studio album, *XOXO*. The music video preceded it by four days, dropping on 1st August, with Korean and Mandarin versions released simultaneously. According to the English-language Wikipedia, the song was composed by Shin Hyuk, DK, Jordan Kyle, John Major, and Zara Gibson; the Korean lyrics were written by Seo Ji-eum, and the Mandarin lyrics by Wang Yajun.
The same album had already introduced a wolf concept through an earlier track, "Wolf." The South Korean entertainment outlet TenAsia noted that "Growl" was more accessible to a mainstream audience: its melody was stronger and its recurring hook more immediately catchy.
Music and Performance
Billboard described the song as built on a sparse, stripped-back beat with a Southern American hip-hop feel — a sonic backdrop that allowed the members' individual talents to stand out. The track was also praised for weaving together rap, R&B melody, and a pop hook within a single cohesive structure.
On stage, the group's sheer size was its greatest asset. TenAsia observed that splitting twelve performers into two groups of six gave each member a moment to register as an individual. During Chanyeol's rap section, the other members surround him in a triangular formation; during Luhan's solo passage, Baekhyun, Chen, and Suho converge on the centre from three different directions. The choreography itself was more restrained than earlier routines, with a wrist-rolling gesture providing the defining visual motif. For a performance on Mnet, the staging leaned into the track's rough energy, placing the group before a half-demolished building flanked by an excavator.
The music video employed a single-take approach to portray two factions of EXO in confrontation. Billboard singled out the one-take technique for the way it placed the group's choreography front and centre, unmediated by editing.
Chart Performance and Records
On the digital side, "Growl" peaked at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart and number three on the Billboard Korea K-pop Hot 100. It was on the physical side, however, that the song's impact proved most dramatic. According to Gaon Chart data compiled as of 6th December 2013, the repackaged album had sold approximately 310,000 copies — enough for the top position overall — while the original album sat in third place with roughly 250,000 copies. By the year-end tally, combined sales of the two editions reached 1,007,586 copies: 471,579 for the original and 536,007 for the repackage. When a winter special album, *Miracles in December*, was added to the count, EXO's total physical sales for the year came to approximately 1.44 million copies. The "Growl" music video crossed 20 million views on YouTube in early December.
Awards recognition followed. On 14th November, at the Melon Music Awards, EXO won the event's top prize — Best Song — for "Growl," and collected two further trophies: the Top 10 Award and the Netizen Popularity Award. Accepting the three prizes, the group said: "We received three awards tonight. We are genuinely honoured." On 22nd November, at the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) held in Hong Kong, EXO won Album of the Year for *XOXO*. International recognition came too: at year's end, Billboard included "Growl" in its list of the 20 best K-pop songs of 2013, calling it the defining track of EXO's year.
Significance
The significance of "Growl" lies not in any single chart position but in its timing. An earlier instalment of this series noted that Seo Taiji and Boys sold roughly 1.7 million copies of their debut album in 1992 alone. By contrast, one million copies in 2013 represents something altogether different — a milestone achieved after the music industry had been fundamentally restructured around digital distribution. In that context, the record stands as evidence that the purchasing power of a devoted fanbase — what the Korean industry calls "fandom" — had re-emerged as a central variable in the commercial calculus of the business.
A second layer of significance is the symbolism of the twelve-member lineup itself. The configuration that recorded and performed "Growl" — including members Kris, Luhan, and Tao — was never to be repeated. All three subsequently departed the group, each under separate circumstances. "Growl," then, remains the sharpest image of all twelve members sharing a single stage.
That said, the record cannot be attributed to any one song. The million-seller figure was the product of the repackaged album, the tracks that preceded it, and a deliberate dual-market strategy spanning South Korea and China. "Growl" is most accurately read as the moment when all of those factors reached their peak simultaneously.
In a sentence
When twelve men growled in unison, the album market answered with its first million-seller in twelve years.
