Red Velvet is a five-member South Korean girl group comprising Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy, and Yeri. The group debuted in August 2014 under SM Entertainment — one of South Korea's dominant entertainment conglomerates — and this year marks their twelfth anniversary. Their fanbase goes by the name "ReVeluv".
The Story So Far
From the outset, Red Velvet built a distinctive identity within SM Entertainment's roster by alternating between two contrasting personas: a bright, playful "Red" concept and a sophisticated, mature "Velvet" one. This dual-concept strategy is widely credited with influencing how subsequent SM girl groups have approached their own artistic identities.
Their annual summer releases — among them "Red Flavor" and "Umpah Umpah" — became genuine mainstream hits, earning the group a reputation as summer's dominant act in South Korean pop. That seasonal formula has remained central to the group's identity well into their second decade. In June 2024, they released the mini-album *Cosmic* to mark their tenth anniversary, a record that served as a summation of their first era as a complete group.
Then came change. Last year, Wendy and Yeri parted ways with SM Entertainment upon the expiry of their exclusive contracts and signed with new agencies. Two core members simultaneously moving to rival companies was the kind of development that could plausibly have cast doubt on the group's future. Yet the five members kept in contact and continued working individually: Joy released her first solo mini-album, *From Joy, With Love*, in August last year, while Wendy followed in September with her third solo mini-album, *Cerulean Verge*. Then, in March this year, all five members appeared together at Wendy's solo concert — a public signal that, despite their differing corporate affiliations, Red Velvet as a unit remained intact.
The News
On 3rd August at 6pm, Red Velvet will return as a full group with the mini-album *Velvet Summer*. The release comes roughly two years and two months after *Cosmic* and represents the group's first full-member activity since Wendy and Yeri moved to their new agencies. The fact that the comeback was achieved at all — navigating the logistical complexity of five individual schedules and the competing interests of multiple management companies — is itself part of what makes it significant.
The lead single, "Surfin' Boy", blends bossa nova guitar, reggae rhythms, and house music into a dance track, with lyrics written solely by Joy evoking the memory of a summer spent with someone cherished. The five-track album also includes "Hula Hoop", an acoustic pop number, and "Hawaii", both carrying a strong sense of season. The tropical sound that runs through the record is consistent with the summery identity the group has cultivated over the years.
The Road Ahead
The central question now facing Red Velvet is whether full-group activities can be sustained — and how frequently — given that the five members answer to different employers. This comeback is symbolically important as proof that the structural obstacles can be overcome, but whether such reunions can become a regular occurrence remains to be seen.
Having members distributed across separate companies means that every future comeback or joint activity will require fresh rounds of negotiation between multiple agencies with their own priorities and schedules. That a group entering its twelfth year can still generate genuine public interest and pull off a full reunion is encouraging.
