Introduction
Samsung launched its first mixed-reality (XR) headset, the Galaxy XR, simultaneously in South Korea and the United States on 22nd October last year. Built on the Android XR platform co-developed with Google, the device marks Samsung's first new mobile form factor since the smartphone — a fact that drew considerable attention at launch. Choi Won-jun, Chief Operating Officer of Samsung's MX (Mobile eXperience) division, declared that the product would establish a new mobile ecosystem and elevate the company's mobile AI vision, positioning the headset as an everyday device.
Specifications
The Galaxy XR is priced at 2,690,000 won (roughly $1,950), with interest-free instalment plans of up to 36 months available through Samsung's own website. The headset features a 4K micro-OLED display and an external battery pack, which must be connected for the device to operate. Use is restricted to those aged 13 and above.
The centrepiece is multimodal AI. The headset simultaneously tracks eye movement, voice commands, and hand gestures, allowing users to select menu items with a glance, trigger functions with a finger motion, and refine results by speaking aloud. Layered on top of this is the Gemini Live AI assistant, which understands what the user sees and hears in real time and can assist with tasks such as drafting documents, translating text, and summarising content. A long press of the top button launches Gemini instantly; a short press brings up a quick panel displaying frequently used apps and shortcuts.
The feature set is broad. A PC Link function lets users mirror their Samsung Galaxy Book laptop screen onto the headset for large-screen multitasking. Incoming calls to a paired smartphone can be answered directly through the headset. The full Android app ecosystem is accessible via the Google Play Store. Additional features include three-dimensional exploration of Google Maps, Google Photos XR (which renders existing flat photos and videos in stereoscopic 3D), and YouTube XR. In passthrough mode — where the real world remains fully visible through the headset's cameras — a "Circle to Search" function lets users look at any object and instantly pull up information about it. Three-dimensional video capture and AI-assisted real-time coaching for games are also supported.
Strengths and Limitations
The device's principal strength lies in the naturalness of its combined eye-tracking, voice, and gesture interface, underpinned by the Gemini-based AI assistant. Rather than merely presenting content, the headset is designed to understand context in real time and actively assist with tasks — a meaningful distinction from earlier XR devices. Compatibility with the existing Android app ecosystem also provides a substantial head start on content breadth.
Limitations are real, however. Under certain conditions — high-resolution streaming or sustained heavy workloads — users have reported frame-rate drops and performance throttling. Symptoms include network latency, dropped frames, and stuttering in passthrough mode. These appear to stem not from hardware defects but from a combination of background service activity, wireless network conditions, and the system's thermal management policies. Leaving location services or Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning enabled can introduce intermittent interruptions that compound streaming delays. The 2,690,000-won price tag, meanwhile, represents a formidable barrier for mainstream consumers.
Verdict
The Galaxy XR is Samsung's opening bid to extend AI-driven experiences beyond the smartphone into an entirely new form factor. The pairing of multimodal AI with Gemini represents a clear point of differentiation over rival XR devices, yet the product still feels unpolished in places. Samsung has signalled plans to extend the family with smart glasses and augmented-reality spectacles, making the Galaxy XR less a finished destination than a starting point on a longer journey.
