Stray Kids is an eight-member multinational boy group that debuted on 25th March 2018 under JYP Entertainment, one of South Korea's leading talent agencies. The group's identity is built on three interlocking elements: rap and hip-hop production from the in-house producing unit 3RACHA (comprising members Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han); melodic contributions from the vocal line; and high-energy choreography from the dance line. Their fanbase goes by the name STAY.
The Story So Far
From the outset, Stray Kids drew attention for an unusual practice in the K-pop industry: members writing and producing their own material rather than relying on agency-appointed songwriters. Over time, that creative autonomy has translated into measurable commercial results. In 2022, their mini-album *ODDINARY* debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 — the American chart widely regarded as the music industry's most authoritative ranking of album sales, with a history stretching back nearly seven decades. Every subsequent album has entered the chart at the top, culminating last November with *DO IT*, their eighth consecutive number-one debut. No act in the Billboard 200's history has achieved that feat: to enter the chart and reach number one with every single release.
That record has cemented Stray Kids' standing as one of the rare groups for whom the label "self-producing artists" is not a marketing posture but a verifiable claim. The contrast is instructive: newer Korean acts have recently courted controversy by promoting themselves as self-produced while their authenticity was questioned publicly. Stray Kids, by contrast, have answered that question through years of accumulated work.
What's Coming
On 7th August at 1pm (KST), Stray Kids will release their new mini-album *This & That*, along with its title track of the same name, simultaneously worldwide. It is their first release in roughly nine months — and their first album of the year — following *DO IT* last November.
The album's conceptual hook is coffee. All eight tracks draw their visual and thematic structure from the vocabulary of coffee: roasting stages and tasting-score formats are used to frame each song. The narrative architecture is equally deliberate. *RUN IT*, released ahead of the album on 24th June, distils the group's trajectory from a small room to global stages. *FARMING* signals a refusal to grow complacent. Further tracks address loneliness, the rush of falling in love, and the quiet chill of a relationship that has already gone cold — together mapping a journey through growth, consolation, romance, and loss.
In interviews conducted shortly after achieving the eighth consecutive chart-topper, the members spoke candidly about what had driven them. Bang Chan described the record as feeling "like a dream", crediting both his fellow members and STAY. Lee Know (Lino) pointed to the discipline of continuing to develop albums even while managing demanding international tour schedules. That world tour, also titled *RUN IT*, is currently under way, having launched on 25th July, meaning the group is navigating the second half of the year with a new album release and a major tour running in parallel.
The Challenge Ahead
The central question now is whether Stray Kids can extend their consecutive Billboard 200 record to nine. The longer a streak of this kind runs, the heavier the expectations that attach to the next release. Whether *This & That* continues the run is the most immediate measure of where the group stands.
The longer-term challenge is subtler: maintaining a self-produced creative identity while finding fresh narratives and concepts with each new cycle. That a group now in its eighth year chose to construct an entire album around the motif of coffee suggests a continuing appetite for experimentation within a consistent artistic framework. Whether that experimental impulse can keep meeting mainstream tastes over the years ahead is the larger question that will define Stray Kids' next chapter.
